Application of "The Making of a Scientist" by VS Ramachandran

"The making of a scientist" written by VS Ramachandran is an opinionated and descriptive essay based on his own experiences. The essay focuses on factors and qualities required to be a scientist. Ramachandran begins with one of the most important element to be a scientist which is a sense of curiosity and wonder. He says one needs to be obsessively, passionately, and almost pathologically curious to become a genuine scientist. He further adds, " Curiosity needs to dominate your life". Similarly, high motivation, family support, complete freedom, and financial independence are the essential factors to be successful scientists. This essay has greatly influenced me with the above mentioned factors.

However, one of the most relatable factor that I strongly agree is curiosity. Curiosity is the foundation of knowledge. It is the desire to learn, to understand new things, and to know how they work. Ramachandran mentioned that he had always been curious about everything and hence showed his interest on the various fields like chemistry, history, physics, botany etc. He talks about having interest in broad topics\disciplines. Unless one isn't curious about their subjects, success cannot be achieved. Due to his curiosity and interest on science, he had presented himself to become a successful neurologist.

Through this text, I learned to develop a sense of curiosity so that I could enjoy every work and subjects that I'm dealing currently with. I further learned that curiosity is essential for excelling in any job and doing it better, because we ask questions, learn from others, and look for ways to do our job in a better way. When curious people fail, they analyze their failure, because they are keen on knowing the reasons, so they can do better the next time. Being curious makes human brain active, motivated, energetic and gives the feeling of being alive.

Ramachandran talks about the circumstances and conditions that turn one to the scientist. He argues curiosity is not the only factor that solely helps a person thrive in his/her chosen field. Family support is as well considered an essential factor. Ramachandran explained about his family members who have helped on various ways and their support during his study. Moreover, he presents the development of a scientist as a process that requires proper support and environment from family as well as society. His teachers, lecturers in his school and college days, had inspired him himself. In his family, his uncle had influenced him to be a scientist; his mother had brought seashells so that he could research on them. Likewise, he had got a chemistry lab opened under his staircase. His father had bought a microscope for him. There's no doubt about the support he got from his family.

Family support is the another factor that was applicable in my context. Whether it's a physical or emotional, family support is beneficial for academic outcomes as it promotes psychological well-being. A robust family relationship supports a person through transitional insecurities and makes them motivated towards their career. Personally, if there wasn't full support and care from my parents, I would have not been able to study Architecture currently. Few years back, my parents actually wanted me to be on a medical field and achieve a degree of a doctor while I had keen interest on how buildings were formed and designed and how they were put into shape. I wanted to study Architecture since I was in grade 10. I had to convince parents about my field of interest and hence, succeeded in it. They finally agreed with me pursuing my career in Architecture. If I had studied without their support, I would have not been here in KU with these amazing course tutors and friends; physically or mentally happy.

Moreover, surrounding yourself with motivating people is one of  the other factor that i found to be effective. Ramachandran had himself surrounded with inspiring and motivating people like his uncle and teachers. Also, he expresses how one should be able to escape from the exile of the actual world and create a private world driven by influences of other successful people and nature to create a true scientist out of oneself. I learned to always surround oneself with successful as well as motivating people as doing will help one to be energetic and flourish in chosen field.

Although, VS Ramachandran had pointed out few factors for being a genuine scientist, what mostly defines for me for a person to become successful is curiosity, proper family support and setting oneself with inspiring personals.
