Response to Moti Nissani's text "Why go to University" using Toulmin's Model of Argument

"I wish there was no need of studying", "If only I could live a prosperous life doing everything except for studies", "What am I doing? Oh no, I really need a break from this". These are the quite common sayings that every students go through once in their lifetime. Most probable reason is due to financial or family issues or anxiety or stress. In the essay, "Why go to University", Moti Nissani has emphasized some important merits of going to university. The writer mentions about importance of university level education with its few advantages.

One of the most obvious reason about why a person should to continue higher studies is because of income and job opportunities. The better educated a person is, the higher the income tends to be. The writer states, "If I take a random sample of 1,000 high school dropouts, 1,000 high school graduates and 1,000 university graduates...the respective number of people under the poverty line in these three groups might be 200, 100 and 50." Though this may not be the exact data, the difference is almost significant. The more knowledge they get, the better will be the enhancement of career development and more better is the quality of life.

Likewise, another reason includes an educated person being more likely to resolve difficulties and conflicts in a rational manner. People also tend to get more confident when they are educated which leads to being satisfied with oneself. Also, they can differentiate what is actually right and wrong in most of the cases.

For further illustration, an educated person is more likely to have a better appreciation for the hazards of smoking, overweight, lack of exercise, or stress. They know what is good for them and what is bad. According to the research posted by journals.plus.org, compared to those with no formal education, smokers with high school education and above were less likely to be addicted to smoking by 31%, 65%, 36% and 27% among males, females, urban residents and rural residents, respectively.
Though educated people are not necessarily healthy, they are more likely to enjoy good health than tycoons or athletes or petrol station attendants or any other group of people.

I am not trying to say every educated person is successful. Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg are examples of successful people despite of being college dropouts. However, the chances of being successful by attending a University is more and the skills learned becomes essential in being successful. University helps people explore several opportunities due to which one becomes more likely to be successful and hence have a better quality of life.

In a nutshell, even though I feel like dropping out at some point, the writer has mentioned about the pros of why a person should to a University where the benefits of continuing one’s
higher education outweigh the reasons not to. And that is why, gaining University level education isn't curse, it's a bliss.
